“Since their 1962 Seattle World’s Fair debut, the five Yamasaki-designed Pacific Science Center arches have become an iconic landmark identified not only with their immediate surroundings but with the City of Seattle itself. The combination of the arches with their fountains and reflecting pools creates a unique setting of beauty, serenity, and continuity. Multitudes of people have experienced joyful times within the visual presence of those soaring white arches, enveloped in the soothing sounds from the nearby fountains and pools. Present and future generations deserve this same memorable, quintessentially Seattle experience. Therefore, it is imperative to restore and carefully maintain—not destroy—this historic landmark in prime condition to ensure that every arch, fountain and pool is preserved in perpetuity.”
